Me and AgrAbility

As some of you know, I'm currently in Indianapolis for the week for my last one week fieldwork! I'm at the National AgrAbility Conference , learning how to assist farmers and ranchers with disabilities with how to safely continue farming/ranching (here's the link if you want more information http://agrability.org/). I'm a little bit out of my comfort zone, which is strange for me...I don't really do things on my own in a city where I don't know anyone! Here is what I have learned since getting here on Sunday:

#1-I am definitely my father's daughter. I have been asking waitresses at restaurants what they recommend on the menu (Dad does that ALL the time), and I've been saying "hello" to a bunch of people as I walk by them on the street (another Dad-ism). This is just a fun fact to make you smile or laugh.
#2-I definitely feel God's hand in my being here. I am loving every minute of the conference, each educational session I attend, and each person I meet! Everyone here has been so welcoming and I can just see doors being opened for future opportunities for me to utilize the knowledge and skills as an OT to help farmers and ranchers.
#3-I've never been one to approach the whole subject of "why do bad things happen to good people?" However, I feel like that is all I've been seeing here. There are farmers and ranchers who have sustained injuries and are disabled for the rest of their lives. Why? Farming and ranching is hard enough for individuals who aren't disabled, so add in a limitation of an amputation or spinal cord injury...that makes the job all the more difficult. Yet everyone I have met has been nothing but grateful and kind and unbelievably courageous and strong.
Some people say God only gives you what you can handle. I just stick with saying that God knows what He is doing, because if I hadn't met these individuals this week, I may have never found this new-found passion for working with this population.

Feel free to post a comment to share your thoughts! Or if you have questions about my fieldwork experience here!

  1. I'm so glad you are so interested in farming! Agriculture is such a huge part of my life..well it was, now it is more a passion that I am trying to pass on to children in a city! Farmers do so much for our world, do what you can to make their life better! You are going to be amazing at it!
